The Use of Impoliteness Strategies in the TV Show "Suits" Abstract The present paper focuses on impoliteness strategies used in the TV show Suits. The aim of this paper is to find out which impoliteness strategies are most commonly used by the characters and how social dimensions such as social distance, relative status and formality influence the speakers’ choice or use of impoliteness strategies. The data consist of 200 short dialogues which were extracted from 16 episodes. Each dialogue contains one or more impoliteness strategies. Culpeper’s (1996) framework for the analysis of impoliteness was adopted for this study. The analysis reveals that speakers with a higher social status tend to use impoliteness more frequently than speakers with a lower or equal social status. Moreover, the results reveal that the use of impoliteness strategies depends on the formality of the setting (i.e. a law firm) and social distance (i.e. intimate or distant) between the speaker and the addressee. Moreover, the analysis showed that legal discourse displays a more frequent use of specific impoliteness strategies despite different legal contexts, i.e. outside the courtroom - in a law firm environment. In some cases speakers used impoliteness for manipulation in order to achieve their goals by threatening or making the addressee feel insecure, or they interrupted (i.e. used negative impoliteness) to express disagreement
